THE 80s - FROM ROLLING PENNIES TO ROLLING IN DOUGH: THE GINGER EFFECT
In the 1980s Vivid bet everything on the appeal of a young and pretty actress named Ginger Lynn. Steven changed the perception of the adult industry forever with the box cover for his first VHS, Ginger, by making it look like a glamorous and sexy magazine cover rather than the typical gritty and low-end porno cover. Lynn was a wholesome, girl-next-door beauty and the cover of her VHS literally stopped traffic in the aisles of both the adult stores and mainstream retailers, which for the first time were willing to display an XXX title. Ginger was a smash hit, and Steven was encouraged to take his next bold step – borrowing from the old Hollywood studio system he created the Vivid Girls concept whereby Ginger Lynn, Jamie Summers, Nikki Randall, Barbara Dare, Hyapatia Lee and other sensual actresses to follow would sign contracts to make movies exclusively for Vivid. He invested heavily in marketing and promotion to build their names and establish a fan base for the Vivid Girls. THE EIGHTIES Ahhhh...The Eighties. Ronald Reagan became President...the Meese Commission seeks an obscenity-pornography-crime relationship (none was found)...Rock Hudson is first celebrity to succumb to AIDS...the Challenger explodes, killing all seven astronauts on board...Barry Diller creates the Fox Network...Oprah Winfrey goes national...Pan-Am 747 explodes over Lockerbie...Chinese students take over Tiananmen Square in Beijing and thousands are killed by the Chinese Army. Memorable Movies: "Rain Man," "Platoon," "Terms of Endearment," "Mississippi Burning," "A Fish Called Wanda," and "Bull Durham." Michael Jackson won Grammy awards with "Beat It" single and "Thriller" album; Bobby McFerrin won for "Don't Worry Be Happy." The Raiders won the Super Bowl (over Washington, 38-9); the Lakers won the NBA Championship against Boston (four games to two); the Dodgers won the World Series (defeating the Oakland As, four games to one). |
